Invisalign: Your Clear Solution

Clear appliances, such as Invisalign, use a series of invisible, removable, and comfortable aligners to straighten your teeth.

The best part? Chances are, no one can tell you’re even getting treatment. And not only are the aligners invisible — they‘re also removable.

So eat and drink what you want and enjoy a comfortable alternative to braces that won’t cause abrasions. Plus, brushing and flossing are less of a hassle with these removable clear aligners.

How Invisalign Works

Invisalign straightens teeth without the use of metal braces by using a series of custom-made clear aligners that cover your teeth and gently pull them into the proper position over time.

And with Invisalign, you won’t have to deal with any metal brackets or wires to detract from your smile.

Whether you‘re a parent exploring orthodontic treatment for your teenager, or an adult who has put off treatment for years, Invisalign is an effective and discreet solution.

Metal Braces vs. Invisalign

Choosing between metal braces and Invisalign is a significant decision when it comes to orthodontic treatment. Here's a comparison to help you make an informed choice:

Looks

  • Invisalign: Invisalign uses clear aligners that are virtually invisible when worn, making them a discreet option for your smile transformation.
  • Metal Braces: Metal braces are more visible due to their stainless steel brackets and wires, which can be noticeable when you smile.

Comfort

  • Invisalign: Invisalign aligners are made of smooth plastic, offering you a more comfortable and irritation-free orthodontic experience.
  • Metal Braces: Metal brackets and wires may cause some initial discomfort or irritation in the mouth.

Staining

  • Invisalign: Invisalign aligners are resistant to staining, as they’re made of clear plastic and are easily removable for cleaning. You’ll also replace your aligners with a new pair every few weeks during treatment.
  • Metal Braces: Metal brackets may occasionally cause slight staining on teeth due to their fixed nature, making cleaning more challenging.

Cost

  • Invisalign: Invisalign is typically slightly more expensive than traditional metal braces due to its advanced technology and customization.
  • Metal Braces: Metal braces are a cost-effective orthodontic option for those on a budget.

Visibility

  • Invisalign: Invisalign aligners are less noticeable, making them a preferred choice for professionals, adults, and older teens seeking a discreet treatment option.
  • Metal Braces: Metal braces are more visible, so individuals, particularly teenagers, will want to consider whether they want the transparency of Invisalign or a noticeable treatment like metal braces that they can customize with colorful elastics to match their personality.

Maintenance

  • Invisalign: Invisalign aligners require regular cleaning. They’re easily removable, but that also means you have to remember to wear your aligners so that your smile transformation stays on schedule.
  • Metal Braces: Metal braces are less likely to stain but require standard oral hygiene practices, such as brushing and flossing around the brackets and wires.

Invisalign for Teens

Many teens get self-conscious when they have a mouthful of braces.

Because clear plastic aligners are less noticeable, your child may not feel as conspicuous. This can do wonders for their self-esteem, too!

Tips for Teens

Check out these helpful tips and tricks to keep your teen’s Invisalign treatment going smoothly:

  • Wear your aligners at all times. You should only remove your aligners to eat or drink liquids other than water. Because you’ll need to wear your aligners 20 – 22 hours a day, you’ll even keep them in while sleeping.
  • Store your aligners safely. When you’re eating, store your aligners in the provided case to protect them from loss, breakage, and contamination. Do not store aligners in a hot car or other environment where they might melt, warp, or otherwise lose shape.
  • Clear your aligners twice a day. You can clean your aligners with your toothbrush and a gentle soap or toothpaste each morning and night before going to bed. Do not clean your aligners by boiling them in water.
  • Remove your aligners carefully. Never flex the plastic material in the middle. Starting in the back and moving slowly forward, pull the aligners off your teeth from both sides of your mouth at the same time.
  • Call us to replace your aligners. If you ever lose or break your aligners, please call our Carrboro office immediately. If you lose too much time not wearing your aligners, you could accidentally extend your treatment time.
  • Ask questions! Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you need answers.
